Dublin transformation helps Ken to top photography prize

By Elaine Sheridan

A talented amateur photographer from Ireland has beaten off thousands of hopefuls to claim the GoIreland Photography Award for 2006.

Ken Sheridan from Trim in Co. Meath beat entries from all over the world to scoop the coveted award.

The awards challenged Irish holidaymakers and visiting tourists to fast forward to the future and capture a photograph of tomorrow’s Ireland today.

Entries from across the world came in for the competition which is aimed at showcasing Ireland and its tourism qualities.

Mr Sheridan’s winning photograph is a black and white grainy effect shot which captures the transformation of Dublin along the River Liffey.

Visiting tourists from South Africa, Germany and the Netherlands were among the runners-up.

The winning photograph together with the 11 runners-up will be reproduced as an original John Hinde Company 2008 calendar.

Hinde was an important pioneer of colour photography in Britain and — since the Irish Museum of Modern Art Dublin exhibition in 1993 — he has become recognised as a significant figure in the social history of photography.

His images helped him become one of the most successful postcard publishers in the world.

On winning the competition 26-year-old Mr Sheridan said: “It was a real shock when I found out I’d won it. Out of about 6,000 entrants it’s a real confidence booster.

“I only took up photography in the last couple of years and it’s something I really enjoy in my spare time. It’s an honour to be featured on a John Hinde calendar, he’s a real legend in this field. The prize of four nights in the Merrion Hotel is also nice and I can’t wait for that.”

GoIreland.com — Ireland’s leading tourism portal and owned by Gulliver Ireland —runs the competition every year and receive thousands of quality photographs from visiting tourists from around the globe.

Each year the standard of photography exceeds all expectation and more and more people are entering.

Gulliver Ireland’s chairman Dick Spring said: “We are delighted with the range and quality of entries from tourists who are helping to develop the GoIreland.com Photography Awards into a genuine international tourist photography competition.

“The range of tourists from countries around the globe who entered the awards while visiting Ireland continued to grow this year. Our congratulations go to this year’s winner, Ken Sheridan, whose winning photograph captured an evocative image on Dublin’s River Liffey.”
