Dublin trio in list of the world’s
top heroes
The European edition of Time Magazine has just revealed its list of the
world’s biggest heroes and three Irishmen have been included.
The list honours people for their achievements as leaders and rebels,
in business and culture and as inspirational figures or explorers since
the magazine’s launch.
Irish duo Sir Bob Geldof and Bono are the recipients of a joint nomination
in the Inspirations and Explorers section.
Both have strived to raise awareness of global poverty and Third World
debt.
Geldof’s tireless 20-year fight against famine culminated in the
Live Aid and Live8 global concerts.
His countryman — and frontman of rock band U2 — Bono has addressed
the world’s leading politicians on numerous issues and is currently
fronting the Red Campaign which seeks to ensure that profits made from
a range of products are dedicated to buying Aids drugs for those suffering
in Africa.
The magazine praises Bono for his “deeply spiritual, gentle, inspired
and inspiring acts of grace”.
Sir Bob is described as “a volcanic force of nature, a man who believes
that life is short and the time for action shorter”.
The magazine obviously holds Bono in high regard, having previously voted
him as one of its people of the year.
Meanwhile Dublin writer Samuel Beckett is included with The Beatles and
Coco Chanel in the Business and Culture list.
The magazine describes him as “a giant of 20th century literature”
who “made theatre audiences queue to watch nothing happening —
twice”.
Time calls him a man “who challenged convention for most of his
life, and ended up inspiring an entire generation of artists with his
stripped-down vision of humanity’s existential struggles.”
