Four years of Nyah festival

Now in the fourth year, the Nyah Arts festival celebrates the traditional music, song, dance and culture of Co. Cavan, the Ulster tradition and the county’s very own musical style.

This year’s Nyah Festival will feature no end of extra traditional sessions and fringe events.

These will include Cavan Multi-Cultural Network’s celebration of foods from around the world and music to mark International Day Against Racism, a traditional singers’ session and open-air concerts, lectures, music and song workshops.

The brainchild of Martin Donohue, Nyah derives its name from that specific word we use to describe what makes traditional music so unique — no other word quite captures the essence of great traditional playing or singing quite like nyah.

Musicians hailing from all over the world include Seamus Creagh (fiddle), Tiarnan Dinkin (pipes), Fintan McManus (bouzouki), Martin Gaffney (flute), Éamonn Curran (piper), Aoife Murray (singer), Mairéad Hurley (concertina), Jacqui Martin (fiddle), Lorraine Sweeney (flute), Richard Lyons (bodhran), Barry McGee (concertina), Art Ó Dufaigh (guitar), Seamus Fay (lilter), Mattie-Jó Shéamais Ó Flatharta (singer) the list goes on and it’s all in a wonderfully central location for traditional enthusiasts in this region.

Put a bit of nyah into your week and visit some of the events planned for Cavan’s traditional arts festival. Nyah weekend March 7-9, Riverfront Hotel and Ramor Theatre Virginia.
