Frankie Kennedy annual concert

THE 14th Scoil Gheimhridh Frankie Kennedy takes places from December 27, 2007 until January 2, 2008 in Dunlewey, Gaoth Dobhair in the Donegal Gaeltacht.

This is the place to be if you’re looking to hear brilliant traditional music and song in one of Ireland’s most scenic locations.

The Frankie Kennedy Winter School was established in 1994 to celebrate the achievement and legacy of the Belfast flute player Frankie Kennedy — founder of traditional super group Altan and one of Ireland’s foremost traditional musicians who died aged 39 in 1994.

This year’s programme includes afternoon recitals at Dunlewey Lakeside Centre with Maighread and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill, Liz Doherty, Daithí Sproule, Tara Bingham, Dermot Diamond and Paddy McMenamin.

One of this year’s special guests is actor Adrian Dunbar who is taking part in the traditional song recital on December 31.

The 8.30pm evening concerts all take place at the Dunlewey Lakeside centre and this year’s programme kicks-off with the Roscommon flute players led by John Wynne on December 28.

Saturday features the inspired pairing of Julie Fowlis from South Uist with Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh from Kerry.

Julie is one of Scotland’s rising stars and Muireann has performed all over the world with Danú.

The event always manages to attract the biggest names in traditional music and this year is no exception with a rare performance on December 30 by legendary Clare musicians Noel Hill and Tony Linnane whose 1979 duet album is considered one of the landmark recordings of Irish traditional music.

The perfect start to a new year is the traditional annual Altan gig showcasing the best of traditional music and song from Donegal.

The event generates over 5,000 bed nights and makes a significant contribution to the local economy and to tourism in Donegal.
