Gradam Ceoil 2008
WORLD-renowned
fiddler Martin Hayes heads the list as the recipient of the TG4 Gradam
Ceoil (Traditional Music Awards) 2008.
The Clare man started playing the fiddle at seven years of age, has won
six All-Ireland titles and been a member of the famous Tulla Céilí
Band since the age of 14.
Although he now lives in Connecticut in the USA Martin spends a considerable
amount of time each year in Ireland.
Other Gradam recipients this year include a young accordion player from
Donegal, two prominent musicians from Cúil Aodha in the Cork Gaeltacht,
the doyen and doyenne of traditional dancing and a pioneering sound engineer
whose technical remastering skills have worked wonders on old recordings.
The awards will be presented at a televised gala ceremony and concert
in the INEC at Killarney in Co. Kerry on Friday, March 21 where the recipients
will be joined by a host of special guests in a concert to be presented
by TG4 presenters Páidí Ó Lionáird and Síle
Ní Bhraonáin.
It will be broadcast on the channel on Easter Monday.
TG4’s Pól Ó Gallchóir says Gradam Ceoil is
now firmly-established as the leading awards scheme for traditional music.
He said: “This year we celebrate the achievements of artists who
have made an enormous contribution to traditional music — a key
component of Irish culture.
“Our sponsorship of this great project is further proof of TG4’s
role as the television home of traditional music.”
Tickets for the Gradam Ceoil concert can be obtained by telephoning
