Irish film buffs top of cinema league
Irish people are at the top of a European table of cinema-goers after
splashing out ?115million last year at the box office.
Only Iceland has more film-goers per capita than Ireland in a survey by
Screen Digest of 29 European countries.
France, Spain and Britain came in third, fourth and fifth in the survey
on average cinema admission per capita and last year there were almost
18million tickets bought by Irish people who love sitting in front of
the big screen — a rise of 10 per cent.
Around 350 films are released in Ireland each year but Hollywood is beating
low-budget home-grown movies this year, with children’s movie and
action-packed blockbusters being the biggest box office hits in a bumper
year for Irish cinema.
