Jockey Egan pleads guilty
Irish jockey John
Egan is behind bars in Britain after an appearance at Bury St Edmunds
magistrate’s court.
Egan, who’s been based in Britain for several years, pleaded guilty
to possession of an unlicensed shotgun, harassment and being drunk in
possession of a vehicle when he appeared before magistrates.
A Suffolk Police spokesman confirmed that Egan was arrested last week
and subsequently appeared in court.
The 38-year-old Co. Galway native — who’s married to Sandra
Hughes daughter of leading Curragh trainer Dessie — was remanded
in custody for sentencing at Ipswich Crown Court at a date yet to be fixed.
The jockey had been enjoying an outstanding year during which he rode
92 winners.
His successful partnership with Tim Pitt brought him success in the Chester
Cup on Admiral and two Group One prizes the Golden Jubilee Stakes and
July Cup with Les Arcs.
He has not ridden since taking a horrifying fall at Wolverhampton on November
25 when he stopped breathing for a minute and needed stitches to a facial
wound.
