Levenshulme community festival had an Irish flavour
This year’s Levenshulme Festival had a distinct Irish flavour as
thousands turned out for the village’s outdoor party and firework
display.
And a special Irish afternoon in the M19 bar brought this year’s
festivities to a close on Sunday.
Dancers from the Keegan Kennedy School of Irish Dancing and musicians
from Young, Gifted & Green together with Irish DJ James Hennigan provided
an afternoon of Irish entertainment.
The Union Inn staged a special Halloween Ball with customers and staff
dressed-up as characters out of the Adams family and other ghostly characters.
The two-week Levenshulme community festival which ran from Saturday, October
20 to Sunday, November 4 attracted close to 10,000 visitors with 5,000
alone attending its outdoor party and fireworks display.
Festival chairperson Tony Hennigan said: “This year’s festival
has been one of our best ones yet and we are already planning next year’s
10th anniversary celebrations.”
Bishop John S Cummins from California visited the Irish event at the M19
Bar.
The Bishop, whose roots stem from Co. Mayo, was warmly greeted by Levenshulme
Festival President Lawrence Hennigan — a fellow Mayo man from Ballycong.
BBC Radio Manchester was on hand to record a live broadcast of Irish Night
and the bishop was interviewed by Irish presenter Evelyn Grealy from Ballyhaunis.
Among the guests and performers on the night were the Rossonerri Celtic
Rock band, Irish singer-songwriter Denise Morgan and fiddler Dezi Donnelly
who has recently returned from a tour of Australia.
Over 500 performers have taken part in art, comedy, dance, music, literary
and theatre events over the two-week festival as part of the arts programme.
Levenshulme is now looking forward to its Irish celebrations to coincide
with St. Patrick’s Day in March.
