Liverpool Festival plans busy 2008 LIVERPOOL Irish Festival
organisers have announced plans to run events throughout 2008.
Supporters of the annual autumn festival said its popularity encouraged
them to start staging events all year round.
This year’s festival takes place from October 17 to November 2.
Several artists are already signed up including Irish folk legend Christy
Moore and a Mike Absalom exhibition on the Liverpool Irish experience.
Other highlights include Seamus Heaney’s adaptation of Burial At
Thebes performed as a modern opera and staged at the Philharmonic Hall
by the Manning Camerata.
The Irish Festival influence will also be in evidence at the January 25
Moving Hearts concert at the Philharmonic Hall with Liverpool Irish musicians
performing as part of the night.
And the George Ferguson School of Irish Dance will represent the Irish
Festival at the Lord Mayor’s parade.
Education programmes are also being planned for the year.
And the festival will be supporting the James William Carling project
which celebrates Liverpool’s famous 19th century pavement artist.
The Institute of Irish Studies at the University of Liverpool will again
play host to a programme of lectures and talks.
Festival director Anna Gilbert said: “The festival is in a very
exciting stage in its development. With full-time attention we’re
able to bring Liverpool Irish culture to the city throughout the year,
increasing awareness of the city’s unique links with Ireland through
arts, culture, sport and education projects.
“This year will see an increase in community and education projects
as we proudly celebrate the Liverpool Irish experience in Capital Of Culture
year.”
A new festival website is under construction and a fundraising post being
created to support the festival.
More events are to be announced throughout 2008.
