| O’Toole still aiming to win
Oscar yet! SCREEN legend Peter O’Toole said he “was
not expecting” an Oscar win despite being nominated eight times.
His agent revealed there were no sour grapes after the Best Actor honour
was once again wrestled from his grasp at the ceremony. The veteran star
was pipped for the statuette by Forest Whitaker for his acclaimed performance
as Ugandan dictator Idi Amin in The Last King Of Scotland.
O’Toole had been in the running for his role in Venus as a lecherous,
ageing actor who falls for a young woman. But the long-time award nominee
is well-used to dealing with defeat and still chose to party the night
away with Whitaker and other winners at the Vanity Fair party.
O’Toole has made no secret that he would love to win an Oscar which
he refers to as “the lovely bugger” outright. He initally
refused to pick up an honorary award in 2003 because he thought he was
still in with a chance. He did eventually agree to turn up to accept the
tribute and declared that he was “always the bridesmaid never the
bride”.
He was first nominated for a Best Actor Oscar in 1963 for Lawrence Of
Arabia. The actor has received three Golden Globes and an Emmy. He has
also found fulfilment outside Tinseltown. O’Toole has written two
books chronicling his childhood in Ireland and England before the Second
World War. He is now devoting his time to a follow-up which is due to
be published later this year.
