Pogues lifetime reward

By Grainne McLoughlin

It’s come as welcome news that the Pogues are to pick up a lifetime achievement award at the glamorous Meteor Ireland Music Awards next month.

The second-generation Irish band, which became more famed for the controversial antics of it’s frontman Shane MacGowan than even its music, are set to receive the award at the ceremony in Dublin’s Point Theatre on February 2.

Band member Spider Stacey said: “It’s a fantastic accolade to be given after all these years and we hope that everyone will enjoy the evening as much as we will.”

The band known at first as the Pogue Mahones were formed by MacGowan, Stacey, Jem Finer and James Fearnley in London over 24 years ago.

Since then they built up their reputation as a fun-loving, patriotic and drink-fuelled band which is now known throughout the world.

The Pogues — which they later became — saw some changes to the lineup including the introductions of Andrew Ranken, Cait O’Riordan, Philip Chevron, Terry Woods, and Darryl Hunt.

The Pogues join good company in winning the accolade. Previous winners include Aslan, The Dubliners, Bob Geldof, U2’s manager Paul McGuinness and Christy Moore.

The band will also perform on the night alongside other acts including The Darkness and Westlife — who are six times Meteor Award winners themselves.

Nominees for music categories include U2, The Corrs, Hal and Bell X1 for Best Irish Band and Damien Dempsey, Joe Chester and Christy Moore for Best Irish Male.

Seventeen Meteor Music Awards will be presented at the ceremony altogether.
