Celtic Jazz pioneers Carmina are launching their new studio album at the
Irish Cultural Centre in Hammersmith this week.
Entitled My Crescent City, this masterpiece is the second collaboration
with Irish music legend Donal Lunny who produced the album and features
as a guest musician.
Carmina first made their name touring Ireland and have since played major
venues and festivals throughout the world.
Their music is original, soulful and sophisticated — an uplifting
blend of traditional and contemporary Celtic sounds with jazz improvisation
in powerful original songs.
Their mix of jazz and Celtic crossover music has captivated audiences
for years and their sound has been compared with Moving Hearts and Joni
Mitchell.
The band boasts an impressive line-up of names in Irish jazz as well as
traditional music with renowned singer and songwriter Pippa Marland at
the helm.
She, along with highly-accomplished songwriter and guitar player Rob King
compose the songs.
The line-up also includes Nic France (drums/percussion); Geoff Castle
(keyboards); Diarmaid Moynihan (uilleann pipes/whistles); Chris Haigh
(fiddle); David Goodier (double bass) and Brian Morrissey (bodhrán/banjo/whistles).
The highlight of the London launch features a guest appearance by Dublin
sax player Richie Buckley, better known for his work with Van Morrison
and Sharon Shannon.
The renowned musician is fundamental to Carmina’s recordings having
worked with the band previously.
As a mark of their success the band have recently signed to Real World
Publishing and have had numerous plays on radio stations throughout Britain
and Ireland.
Critics in Ireland have reviewed the new offering with great acclaim.
The launch is taking place on Saturday, March 29 at the Irish Cultural
Centre on Black’s Road in Hammersmith. Doors 8pm. Tickets cost £10/£8
concessions. Contact 020 8563 8232 for further details.
