Ronnie rallies

By Elaine Sheridan

Singer Ronnie Drew has admitted he was a “gobshite” not to seek medical treatment sooner than he did.

Recently diagnosed with throat cancer the bearded folk icon kept his humour up throughout his treatment.

He said: “I felt it coming on for a while because I was getting sore throats and didn’t seem to have the same power in my voice. But like all gobshites, I waited and waited before I went about it.

“When the diagnosis was made I got the fright of my life, of course. I was really shocked. I’ve accepted it now though.”

Ronnie, 72, was recently admitted to hospital for four days treatment including chemotherapy and he is undergoing a weekly dose over the next few weeks before he gets readmitted for another blast.
