Samuel Beckett centenary festival
gets under way
By Grainne McLoughlin
The festival marking the centenary of the birth of literary legend Samuel
Beckett
This month was launched in fabulous style last week with U2 frontman
Bono taking to the stage.
The Irish rock star launched the festival programme alongside Minister
for Arts, Sport and Tourism John O’Donoghue in Dublin Castle.
Invited by Michael Colgan, Director of the Gate Theatre and the Chairman
of the Beckett Centenary Committee, Bono was said to be privileged to
do the honours in launching the celebratory festival.
The musician —who presented Beckett with a copy of U2’s The
Unforgettable Fire in 1985 — was, before the event, presented with
a signed edition of Beckett’s book Murphy.
Several events will be taking place throughout Ireland and Britain to
celebrate the work of the creator of Waiting for Godot.
