St. James the Great branch of Comhaltas was formed in 1989 in Pollok by two stalwarts of Irish culture in Glasgow — Monsignor Matt Coakley and Rory Campbell.

These two visionaries had the idea of starting a Comhaltas branch in the middle of the Pollok housing estate at a time when there were very few cultural opportunities in the area.

Despite some initial cynicism that such a venture could ever thrive the branch has gone from strength to strength and is now flourishing in its 18th year.
