Star’s mum knits teddies for tragic tots The
mother of an award-winning Irish singer/songwriter has turned her hand
to knitting special teddy bears for children faced with tragedy.
Vi Morrison, the mum of the legendary Van Morrison, is one of about 12
women who meet at Age Concern’s East Belfast Day Centre to knit
the teddies, which are then given to the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service
(NIAS).
The teddies are distributed to children caught-up in horrific road accidents,
house fires or other tragedies.
And Mrs Morrison said it was “absolutely wonderful” the toys
would bring comfort to children.
She said: “Our group meets every Monday to knit and crochet, whilst
at the same time having plenty of time to chat and laugh together.
“It’s great to meet people of a similar age and we feel delighted
to be able to contribute something positive and to help traumatised children
in our local community.”
NIAS station officer Eddie Richmond praised the group’s work.
He said: “Yet again, it takes the senior citizens to do something
positive for the whole community. These teddies are a fantastic aid because
putting young children in an ambulance is a very traumatic experience
for them.”
