THEATRE REVIEW: PARADISE BOUND
Bound for life as an outsider
IRISH writer Jonathan
Larkin’s new play Paradise Bound opens at the Liverpool Everyman
Theatre on Friday April 28 and runs until Saturday May 20.
The comedy — set in the Dingle area of the city where he and his
famous namesake Irish trade union leader Jim Larkin were born —
focuses on Anthony, who does not quite fit in with the rest of the locals.
He’s into the latest subtitled film, drinks green tea and can’t
understand why everything in Dingle feels the same — despite Liverpool
being the European Capital of Culture 2008.
Ciaran Griffiths makes his Everyman debut as Anthony. Best known to television
audiences as PC Gary Best in The Bill, he will soon be appearing on the
BBC in Jimmy McGovern’s new drama The Street.
Michael Ryan plays his best friend Danny. Michael is regular Dean Boyle
in Sky One’s Dream Team and his film credits include the John Lennon
biopic In His Life.
Playing Danny’s abandoned mum, Kathleen, is Lancashire-Irish actress
Mary Jo Randle.
Her last play was as Irish mother Margaret in What’s in the Cat
by Linda Brogan at the Royal Court Theatre in London. Kathleen also appeared
in the film Bad Behaviour with Stephen Rea and Sinead Cusack.
