Trad music event will benefit Irish fiddler

A benefit night is taking place for one of London’s finest exponents of traditional Irish music who has been unable to work for some time due to illness.

Brian Rooney is a captivating fiddle player from Kiltyclogher in Co. Leitrim with a strikingly individual style of playing. Over the years he has been a beacon in the Irish music community — always being extremely generous with his fine music and good company.

Due to Brian’s recent misfortune friends are hosting a benefit evening of traditional Irish music featuring some of Ireland’s finest musicians including John Carty, John Blake, Le Chéile, Seanín McDonagh, James Carty and Reg Hall in his honour.

The event is set to take place on Saturday, July 21 at the Corrib Rest public house on Salusbury Road.

Most London musicians cite Brian as an influence on their playing and down the years many visiting musicians have made a point to seek him out for the opportunity to experience him and his music up close.

Emigrating to England in the early 1970s Brian met up with musicians such as Jimmy Power, Danny Meehan and Bobby Casey in the capital.

One of the most influential figures on the music scene, his 1999 debut album The Godfather was hailed as a classic.

Both that and his follow-up album Leitrim To London have received much critical acclaim.

8 Tickets for the Corrib Rest event are £10. Telephone 07879 055988 for further information.
