World’s largest session An attempt to stage the world’s
largest session as part of Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann was the brainchild
of James Hogan, Comhaltas youth officer.
The musical record attempt followed the Fleadh’s opening parade
and was a sight and sound to behold.
However it wasn’t confined to Fleadh musicians with an invitation
extended to all musicians in the region to come to O’Connor Square
in Tullamore on Friday, August 24 to take part in the event.
Chairperson of the Fleadh committee Attracta Brady explained that all
competitors who got through from their provincial Fleadhanna got an invitation
to participate in the event.
An estimated 2,700 musicians played in O’Connor Square on the Friday
night.
The spectacle marked the opening of the 2007 Fleadh, which is being hailed
as the largest cultural event in Europe this year attracting in the region
of 250,000 people along with 10,000 competitors.
Although it was not officially ratified by the Guinness Book Of Records,
James and Attracta are claiming a world record.
The music was led by James and his youth group with Attracta, her parents
and her daughter Róisín also joining in.
They were joined by 2,700 musicians and one balloon was released for every
minute the session lasted. |
