Comhaltas Corner: 'Armagh Pipers announce Kennedy Festival line-up'

By Joe Mullarkey

The Armagh Pipers Club have announced details of the 11th William Kennedy Piping Festival.

First held in 1994 to commemorate the extraordinary life of the blind 18th century pipe maker from Tandragee in Co. Armagh, the festival has grown to become one of the biggest of its kind in the world.

This year’s festival will feature pipers from Galicia, Brittany, Sardinia, Hungary, Cape Breton, England, Scotland, and Ireland.

Festival highlights will include rare Irish performances from Davy Spillane, Carlos Nunez, The Kathryn Tickell Band and Patrick Molard.

The festival will also highlight local talent with performances by current World Pipe Band Champions The Field Marshall Montgomery Pipe Band and BBC Radio 2 Young Musician of the Year Jarlath Henderson.

The festival will mainly be based in the Market Place Theatre in Armagh where there will be evening concerts as well as free lunchtime recitals.

There will also be sessions, workshops, a Céilí, a festival club, CD and book launches as well as a range of activities for schoolchildren and much more at various venues.
