CD REVIEW By Jon Myles
The Pogues Red Roses For Me, Rum Sodomy And The Lash, If I Should Fall From Grace With God, Peace And Love, Hell’s Ditch, Waiting For Herb, Pogue Mahone.
It seems like only yesterday — but it was actually 20 years ago that a new sound emerged on the Irish scene.
For it was 1984 that a one-time devotee of the London punk scene decided to fuse that raucous sound with the more musical strains of Irish traditional instruments.
From out of nowhere, Shane MacGowan and The Pogues had created a musical chemistry that sounds as fresh today as it did then in the early 1980s.
If, for some bizarre reason, you’ve never had the privilege of hearing all their work then now’s your chance.
All seven of the albums have been remastered and re-released — with bonus tracks for the completists among you.
OK, they’re not all masterpieces. But Rum, Sodomy And The Lash, If I Should Fall From Grace With God and Hell’s Ditch certainly are.
And what’s more the latter comes with the addition of Rainy Night In Soho — if not one of the best songs ever written certainly the best one ever penned about Soho.
There's high and low moments throughout — but mostly high, especially on their masterpiece If I Should Fall From Grace With God.
And it gives everyone another chance to make sure they have Fairytale In New York all ready to go for those drunken Christmas moments.
