U2 pick up another award

By Grainne McLoughlin

U2Ireland’s greatest rock group were last week honoured with Portugal’s Order of Liberty award for their worldwide humanitarian efforts.

President Jorge Sampaio presented U2 with the prestigious award before their concert in Lisbon last Sunday.

U2’s frontman Bono and the rest of the band have been heavily involved in various charity events including the recent Live 8 concert held in Hyde Park, which attempted to apply pressure on rich nations to alleviate poverty.

A spokesperson for the Portuguese president said: “Over the last 25 years the band has allied its public exposure gained through musical success with the defence of humanitarian causes and human rights.”

Bono was also a major figure in the Live Aid concert for Ethiopian famine relief 20 years ago and has since campaigned tirelessly for the world's poor.
