Finding Maddy alive is only way to end suspicion

It seems the tragedy that is the case of poor Madeleine McCann becomes ever darker by the day.

Her parents have now returned home to Leicestershire having been formally branded as suspects in the disappearance of their daughter by Portuguese police.

Both Kate and Gerry McCann plus their family and friends in both Britain and Ireland have described the police’s actions as ludicrous and vowed to fight to clear the couple’s name.

Meanwhile the couple have asked for their privacy to be respected while they consider their next step. Unfortunately that is a request which is unlikely to be heeded.

The McCanns have done a marvellous job in keeping the name of Madeleine in the headlines as they desperately search for their missing youngster.

All too often these cases have a habit of fading from public attention once other news events roll by. But Madeleine has dominated the headlines ever since she disappeared 130 days ago.

Now the latest development means the spotlight will continue to shine on the McCann family for many weeks to come.

And, as one friend pointed out, it also puts Kate and Gerry in the worst of all possible situations.

If there are no subsequent charges brought against the couple there will still always be suspicions in some people’s minds that they had some involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.

On the other hand if the Portuguese police do decide to bring a case the couple will be involved in a lengthy legal battle which will inevitably divert attention away from the search for their missing child.

And in the meantime the cameras are likely to continue to track them wherever they go.

One can only hope that to put an end to all this misery Madeleine McCann herself is found safe and well somewhere soon.

Recruits needed not a leader

SENATOR Fiona O’Malley has thrown her hat into the ring to succeed Mary Harney as leader of Ireland’s Progressive Democrats.

All well and good to her. But as the party has only two current TDs — Harney and Noel Grealish — the question has to be asked as to whether it actually needs a leader.

Perhaps a recruitment consultant might be a more pressing requirement.
