Lordly Anger at Irish Seeking a Welsh Haven
On July 8, 1528, Sir Rhys ap Griffith, a personal friend of the English
Lord Chancellor Cardinal Thomas Wolsey (c. 1475-1530), wrote to him about
the problems arising from a mass immigration of Irish into Pembroke which
had recently taken place. Sir Rhys had estimated that some 20,000 Irishmen
with their families had entered the county within the last 12 months.
