Actor to make rare appearance at preview
Daniel Day-Lewis is to make a rare public appearance when he will speak
at a preview of his new Oscar-nominated movie.
The 50-year-old, who won a Golden Globe and is tipped to win best actor
at the Oscars, will be at the Clapham Picturehouse on February 11 and
the talk will be beamed live via satellite to 10 other Picturehouse cinemas,
including Greenwich and the Ritzy in Brixton.
Day-Lewis, who was born in London but grew up in Ireland, will take part
in a question-and-answer session after a screening of There Will Be Blood,
in which he plays a Texan oil prospector.
Cowley date
Renowned historian Ultan Cowley will be at the Hammersmith Irish and Cultural
Centre in London later this month to discuss the role and relationship
of the Irish navvy in British construction throughout the years.
Since the late 18th century the Irish have played a major role in the
expansion of British industry and to the country’s canal, road and
rail network. The British construction industry owes a great deal to Irish
skills in excavation and construction, with their contribution to the
development of this industry having been immeasurable.
Cowley has written extensively on this subject in his book The Men Who
Built Britain — A History Of The Irish Navvy and topics on the night
will include how the Irish attained their status, whether it was merited
and at what price.
The event will take place on Thursday, February 21 at 6.30pm — contact
020 8563 8232 for further details.
