An introduction to Irish literature in Mansfield

THE Black Bull in Mansfield is the venue for an exciting seven-week programme which comprises an introduction to modern Irish writing in English.

The course is being organised by Fr. Jim Burke founder of The Mansfield & Dukeries Irish Association in association with Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottingham Irish Studies Group.

No previous knowledge of Irish literature is required. The course will be led by Deirdre O’Byrne a member of the Nottingham Irish Studies Group and literature development officer for Nottingham City Council.

Deirdre, who hails originally from Carlow, has a special interest in promoting programmes and courses of Irish interest and has lectured here in Britain and in her native Ireland.

She has also devised an imaginative programme for Mansfield which includes an Irish film event on May 10 and The North where members will look at some of the great writers that come from the North of Ireland including Seamus Heaney and Paul Muldoon.
