Bad heroin blamed for six deaths
in Dublin
Six drug addicts have died after taking contaminated heroin in Dublin
over the past two weeks.
A major investigation is under way after one female and five males died
in three city hospitals.
Post-mortems were carried out on the deceased who range in age between
26 and 43.
It is believed that the contaminated heroin is linked to the huge upsurge
in gardaí seizures of the drug in recent months. In the past year
100 kilos of the drug have been seized indicating that there has been
a dramatic rise in heroin abuse.
Six years ago another batch of bad heroin caused the deaths of eight addicts
in South Dublin. Another 18 died in Scotland as a result of the same consignment
which was believed to have originated in Holland.
Ruthless dealers have been mixing heroin with all types of substances
because of the sudden shortage in supply. The Garda National Drug Unit
advised all heroin addicts to immediately seek medical advice if they
fall ill.
