Can you help Linda find her real father?

By Cornelia Lucey

Do you know John Duffy?

A mother-of-two has turned to Irish Post readers in her last hope to discover her father’s true identity.

Six months ago Linda Carter found out what she had always suspected — that she was Irish.

Brought up by her natural mother and adopted step-father the subject of her real father has always been treated as taboo but now she knows his name she has set about trying to find him.

The 45-year-old said: “I had a big shock in August when I was staying with my aunt in Birmingham.

“Although sworn to secrecy by my mother she revealed my father was Irish and his name was John Duffy.

“He’d had a relationship with my mother for over a year. But my mother always denied that she had a relationship with him.

“Apparently I look just like him — I don’t look like anybody else in my family.

“I was told my father had asked to marry my mother but she would not allow him because she didn’t believe he loved her.”

Linda also believes that her father tried to see her but that all his attempts were in vain — especially after her mother married.

When she was 18 months old she and her family moved to Northampton.

Ever since Linda was denied knowledge of her real father. Having always had a strained relationship with her mother Linda felt compelled to find a father who she might have much in common with.

The complex nature of Linda’s situation — she has been adopted and has two stepfathers — means the usual support groups cannot help her to trace her father.

She said: “I’ve done a lot of digging and I’ve even hired a private detective but we’ve come up against a brick wall.

“There’s no hidden agenda for me in this. Nor is there any hard feelings. I’ve always felt my dad had a hard time in maintaining contact with me.

“But I need to know the truth — I need to know who I am and my daughters need to know who their granddad is.

“I’m an only child — but I could have a whole family out there.”

Linda was born on March 5, 1961 in Birmingham.

Her mother’s maiden name was Carter and she worked with John Duffy in a box manufacturer in the Winston Green area.

John Duffy would be in his late 60s or early 70s.
