Citizenship rules will not affect the Irish IMMIGRATION
taxes and citizenship tests that could be applied to foreigners who come
to Britain for work or residency will not affect Irish nationals a Home
Office spokesperson has confirmed.
An overhaul of the citizenship and immigration system in Britain, announced
by the Prime Minister last week, could see others paying an immigration
tax upon entry, being made to show they are learning the language and
prove their commitment to the State before graduating as a citizen.
Launching Gordon Brown’s green paper The Path To Citizenship on
February 20, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith stated: “Our new deal for
citizenship is clear and fair.
“The rights and benefits of citizenship will be available to those
who can demonstrate a commitment to our shared values and a willingness
to contribute to the community.”
The paper suggests foreigners needing a visa to enter Britain pay the
additional tax so that funds can be fed back into the public services
which they will use.
But Irish nationals relocating in England will not be affected. |
