Complaint made over Paisley hiring son
A COMPLAINT has been made to Britain’s parliamentary standards
commissioner about Northern Ireland First Minister Ian Paisley employing
his son and former Stormont Junior Minister Ian Paisley Jnr as a researcher.
Commissioner John Lyon will examine the complaint before deciding if it
merits a full investigation.
The preliminary inquiry is another potential blow for the Paisley family
in a week that saw Ian Paisley Jnr dramatically resign as a Stormont Minister.
Just a few days later Mr Paisley Jnr spelt out the nature of his Commons-related
work for his father and said it involved a salary of £9,000 to £11,000.
That was on top of some £62,000 a year for his posts as a Junior
Minister and MLA.
Mr Paisley’s DUP party admitted 18 of its MPs and Assembly members
have relatives working for them.
Out of 81 staff employed by the DUP 26 are family members.
Mr Paisley Jnr has worked as a research assistant for his father since
1998.
He resigned as a Junior Minister following questions about his relationship
with a developer and lobbying on a government land deal but has denied
any wrongdoing. |
