Cultural links forged with Islamic group The
Irish were out in force and forging unique links with the Islamic community
at a recent event held in the West Midlands.
The Older People’s conference, which was held in West Bromwich and
celebrated the area’s vibrant diversity, was attended by many people
from many cultures.
A display of Irish dancing was given by four dancers — Aoife Kiernan,
Hannah Lovering, Ciara Shilton and Amelia Bickley — from St. Gregory’s
primary school in Park Road, Smethwick.
Sandwell Irish Society used the event to link with Smethwick’s Bangladeshi
Islamic Centre and will now raise funds to help survivors of the recent
cyclone that hit the south Asian country last month.
Sandwell Irish Society development officer Siobhán Gorman said:
“It was a very good opportunity to promote community cohesion by
linking these two communities to raise some money for the thousands of
victims of the recent cyclone in Bangladesh.”
The Irish organisation’s annual Christmas tea dance will be held
on Friday, December 14 and all proceeds from the raffle will be handed
to Abdul Subhan from the Bangladeshi Islamic Centre in Lewisham Road,
Smethwick.
Ms Gorman said: “It is important that we remember the plight of
people around the world who are less fortunate than ourselves and we Irish
have a good reputation for our kindness and generosity.
“This will be a contribution from some members of the Irish community
in Sandwell towards the relief work being done to ease the pain and suffering
of many human beings in Bangladesh.”
