Depth of Irish binge drinking is
revealed
IRISH women have topped the charts for binge-drinkers.
A recent study co-written by Professor Andrew Steptoe of University College
London showed that 57 per cent of Irish women admitted to binge drinking
on four or more units in one fortnightly session.
Irish women were distantly followed by 33 per cent of British women who
admitted to binge drinking and only one per cent of Romanian women.
Irish men also came in first in the study of binge-drinkers with a rate
of 49 per cent. Belgium had 48 per cent, Poland 46 per cent and Slovakia
44 per cent.
According to medical research women may be harming their livers 20 years
in advance of what they should.
Binge-drinking women increase their chances of dying of heart disease
by seven times. The risk of getting breast cancer also reportedly increases
by drinking more than three glasses of wine.
And Researcher Dr Min Yang of London’s Queen Mary’s College
said if drinking stopped, violent behaviour would dramatically decrease.
