Drugs haul was bound for Dublin gangs A RECORD heroin
haul seized by Customs officers at Dublin Port last week is believed to
have been intended for drug trafficking gangs in south Dublin.
The shipment had been concealed in legitimate cargo which was listed for
a false address in Co. Wicklow.
Customs officers located the 12 kilos of heroin with a street value of
?2.4million and 2.5 kilos of cocaine worth ?175,000 with the help of Lulu
— one of their sniffer dogs.
The drugs were concealed in two wood burning ranges that had been loaded
on to a ship at Rotterdam in the Netherlands.
The ranges were made in the Netherlands and then fitted with special compartments
which contained the packages of heroin and cocaine.
During a routine check at Dublin Port Lulu and a detailed search uncovered
10 blocks of heroin and two blocks of cocaine.
Follow-up inquiries established that the Wicklow address on the cargo
was a bogus one.
Detectives now believe that a number of drug gangs based in south Dublin
banded together to organise the shipment and distribute the drugs on the
southside of the capital and in north Wicklow.
air link dropped
ONE of Northern Ireland’s air links with London is being dropped
at the end of October, it has been announced.
Air Berlin is pulling out of its service between the George Best Belfast
City Airport and London Stansted.
The airport said it was disappointed but said it still had plenty of links
with London.
Air Berlin, which has operated the service for around 18 months, has made
no formal announcement of its decision but it is believed to be down to
increased operating costs.
Air Berlin pulls out on October 29 just after Ryanair launches its first
services from the Belfast airport to Glasgow, Liverpool and East Midlands. |
