Forgotten hero of 1916 honoured
Sinn Féin has welcomed Dublin City Council’s decision to
honour one of the forgotten women of the 1916 Rising.
Elizabeth O’Farrell was one of the unsung hero’s of Ireland’s
rebellion against the British and an active member of Cumann na mBan.
Speaking at the ceremony Sinn Féin’s Dublin South East Representative
Councillor Daithí Doolan welcomed the long overdue monument in
her honour.
He said: “Elizabeth played a full and active part in 1916 yet she
has become an unsung hero of the Rising. Today is a serious attempt at
undoing some terrible rewriting of the history of this nation.
“I am delighted that Dublin City Council has agreed to honour Elizabeth
O’Farrell in a fitting and honourable manner here in Dublin by unveiling
this monument in City Quay where she was born.
“I feel it only fitting the city remembers this great woman and
recognises the role she played during those historic events.”
Elizabeth — a member of Cumann na mBan — played a full and
active role in the Rising of 1916.
She accompanied Padraig Pearse while they handed over the official surrender
to the British forces at Moore Lane in Easter 1916.
Since then O’Farrell’s contribution has been largely ignored
but Cllr Doolan said it was imperative that her place in Irish history
was restored.
He said: “I hope we can use the event to reflect on her role in
1916 and ensure women like Elizabeth take their place in the records of
Irish history.”
