Glass in ready meal food scare forces recall

An Irish company is at the centre of a major food scare in Britain. Major supermarkets have been forced to withdraw ready meals containing rice after concerns they contain glass fragments.

All the products were manufactured by Rye Valley Foods, which is based in Monaghan.

The Food Standards Agency put out an alert on its website listing 28 Asda, Sainsbury’s and Birds Eye products concerned.

Each company is recalling affected stock and consumers can take any products they have back to stores.

A spokesman for Rye Valley Foods said their immediate concern was for the safety of customers: “The problem was discovered after around 20 complaints were made by customers who had found small, rounded fragments of glass in rice-based frozen ready meals.

“We are not aware of anyone being hurt but the immediate concern has been for the safety of customers. Companies we supply have been alerted and have withdrawn any batches that may be affected from their warehouses.”

Many products have best before dates before the end of October, but there are concerns some customers may have them in their freezers.
