Irish quids in for Christmas
By Elaine Sheridan
Christmas
has come early for a host of Irish community organisations in Britain
as the Irish Government announces it is awarding additional grants to
almost 50 good causes.
A total of 45 community groups spanning the whole of Britain will benefit
by nearly £1,000 each from what the Department of Foreign Affairs
calls its ‘Christmas Box’.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern emphasised there was particular
priority in supporting projects that assist older, more vulnerable Irish
people.
He said: “The funding of community groups working with our emigrants
is an essential and positive element in strengthening our outreach to
the wider Irish family worldwide.
“As we approach the season of Christmas, I am delighted once again
to make a number of Christmas boxes available to Irish community organisations
in Britain, who provide support, assistance and friendship to our older,
and often more vulnerable Irish citizens.”
A total of ?63,000 (about £44,922) has been awarded in addition
to the annual Dion grants and will contribute towards helping organisations
provide Christmas lunches and parties for their patrons.
Each group will receive a total of ?1,400 (about £998).
It is the second year that this extra money has been given.
Mr Ahern said: “We have a great tradition in Ireland of giving to
those less fortunate than ourselves.
“These contributions towards the provision of seasonal cheer at
Christmas gatherings, such as lunches and parties, are continuing the
initiative I began last year, and one which I hope to continue in future
years.”
Manager of the Haringey Irish Cultural Centre Tony Brennan said: “At
this time of the year it is always nice to receive something that will
help us make Christmas special for our patrons.
“We had two tea dances here last week with over 250 pensioners turning
up to each.
“The extra money helps bring people out together and enjoy themselves
at this special time.
“We will certainly put it to good use.”
Tony Corcoran from the Tyneside Irish Centre said the extra money would
go towards the grand opening of the new facility on February 7.
He said: “Although the new lift has already been substantially funded
by Dion we are always grateful for extra help.
“The money will go towards welcoming new users to the centre and
providing hospitality for the people who have not been able to access
the centre until now.
“We very much appreciate this Christmas gift.” |
