Irish evoke memories from the Elephant and Castle
London’s Elephant and Castle is now the subject of a £1.5billion
redevelopment plan. A substantial amount of post-World War II social housing
will be demolished — including the Heygate Estate which has been
home to a large Irish community for over 30 years. In June The Irish Post
revealed how some residents had united to oppose council plans to empty
the estate by September 2009 and here they tell SALLY FITZHARRIS what
has made the area such a unique home away from home.
