Jameson’s whiskey at a premium

LIKE a drop of whiskey? Then this could be just for you.

But you’d better make sure you’ve got deep pockets.

Irish Distillers has launched a new premium Jameson whiskey — at a price of £175 a bottle.

Jameson Rarest Vintage Reserve will be the company’s priciest bottle — with a limited supply of 1,300 cases.

The whiskey has been under development at the firm’s distillery in Midleton, Cork for several years.

Jameson’s communications director Kieran Tobin said the triple-distilled whiskey was made from the best and rarest of Jameson reserves which had been aged for an average of 21 years.

He said the firm expected the whiskey — which will sell for 10 times more than standard Jameson — to be bought for consumption, collection and gifts.

In the year to the end of June sales of Irish Distillers’ premium whiskey brands — Jameson 12 and 18-year-old, Midleton and Redbreast – rose by 17 per cent.

The firm sold 2.3million cases or more than 20million litres of the Jameson range last year made up mostly of the standard Jameson.

The firm is currently spending ?15million a year on the distillery in Midleton as it aims for a target of 3million cases a year.

Mr Tobin said: “If we want to sell 3million cases we can’t just turn on the tap. The whiskey has to mature so we have to invest continually in distilling and warehousing.”
