Job club initiative to help Irish
community
A housing and employment
charity has launched a free job club specifically aimed at serving the
Irish community.
Safe Start Foundation launched the initiative in a bid to stem spiralling
unemployment, ill-health and homelessness amongst ageing and young Irish.
Yorkshire man Neil Watson who is charge of the scheme said: “The
response from our Irish partners in coming forward to help the Irish community
has been overwhelming.
“In recent years it’s come to light that Irish people are
neglected but feel reluctant to seek help that they are entitled to.
“But we want to make it known that we are here to help anyone who
needs job advice or direction of any kind.”
So far the job club has been contacted by a range of people, word is spreading
and having a domino affect in attracting people to getting advice.
Neil said: “Gentlemen who have been heavily involved in the construction
trade and aren’t able to handle such heavy work any more have contacted
us to see how they can use their skills else-where.
“Ladies who have worked in factories and through ill-health can’t
work such long hours have also contacted us to see how they might be retrained
in different areas.
“We are also working with young people who need guidance on their
future like how to find apprenticeship schemes.”
The club — based in Wembley — can help with professional CV
writing, interview preparation, work experience, internet access and training
and a whole range of other services.
Neil was posted to the position thanks to Díon funding for the
group.
He said: “We are confident that we can help anyone who comes to
us. Give it a try.”
He has diverse experience in job-advice and was involved in the national
Welfare-to-Work initiative before joining the Irish foundation.
