MOTHER’S PLEA FOR TRAGIC SON
By
Trevor O’Sullivan
A grieving Irish mother whose son was killed in a hit-and-run accident
is appealing for witnesses on the first anniversary of his death.
Gail Furlong’s son, 31-year-old Darren Hughes, died last year in
London on September 5 after his bicycle was involved in a collision with
a maroon jaguar at the junction of Holloway Road and Manor Gardens.
The car was later found abandoned in Sussex Way, Upper Holloway.
A 43-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous
driving and remains on police bail.
Darren was a builder and moved to Britain with his family from Tramore
in Co. Waterford in 1990.
And now a year on from the tragedy his mother has spoken publicly for
the first time in the hope that a witness to the accident will come forward.
She said: “The loss of Darren has devastated the whole family. Even
after a year it is still hitting me very hard, the stress brought on by
his death has made me ill.
“I don’t know how anyone could knock someone over, kill them
and then drive off without stopping.
“How could someone do that to another human being? It’s hit
me so hard that I have now not driven for over a year; as I can’t
face getting behind the wheel.
It has taken until now for Ms Furlong to be able to visit the scene in
Holloway Road where her son lost his life.
She said: “I felt physically sick and my knees were like jelly.
“Darren will never be forgotten and I am appealing to anyone who
has any information to contact the police or for the driver to give himself
up.
“It’s the not knowing what actually happened to him that is
stopping us from coming to terms with his death.”
Police are also renewing appeals for witnesses to come forward.
Detective Sergeant David Hindmarsh of the Collision Investigation Unit
at Euston said: “We are very keen to speak to anyone who witnessed
this collision or the vehicle as it made off along the Holloway Road and
was then abandoned in Sussex Way.
“I am appealing to anyone who has any information about who was
driving the Jaguar on that Tuesday night to come forward.
“Without the account of the driver of the vehicle we will never
know what happened that day and be able to explain to Darren’s mother
why her son died.”
n Anyone with information is asked to contact Euston Traffic Garage on
020 7 388 6806 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
