Missing mum’s last chance

SHE was left abandoned five years ago in a sports bag outside a hospital. And since then no trace of the mother has been found.

But now the woman has been offered one final chance to come forward.

The infant dubbed Sophia by the Cork porter and nurses who found her has been with the same foster parents since 2003.

And the child can now be formally adopted if her natural mother does not come forward within the next four days.

The infant was discovered in a holdall by the car park of the South Infirmary of Victoria Hospital in Cork.

Hospital porter Matt Shields spotted the baby after movement within the bag attracted his attention as he took a lunch break from his hospital duties.

It is believed Sophia was between three and four days old when she was abandoned in the car park in October 2003.

The baby was healthy and uninjured by its ordeal — but despite a massive campaign by both the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the gardaí no trace of the baby’s mother was ever found.

Now Sophia’s foster parents want to formally adopt her and the High Court has directed that one final effort be made to trace her natural parents.

Repeated efforts over the past five years to trace Sophia’s mother and family have met with no success.

The HSE has stressed that any information obtained would be treated in the strictest confidence by all parties.
