| Mother set to reunite with abandoned
baby THE young Irish woman who left her newborn baby in a public
toilet in an Australian beach resort last week is to be reunited with
her child.
The family of 21-year-old Amy Eustace from Wexford has confirmed that
arrangements are being made to bring the baby boy believed to be around
a month old back to Ireland.
Amy’s father Mick Eustace said that the authorities in both Ireland
and Australia, with the full co-operation of their family, were working
hard to resolve the situation and reunite the infant with his mother.
Mick said that both Amy despite her ordeal and her little boy were in
good health.
Though there is a lot of red tape to be dealt with the Eustace family
are hopeful that mother and child will be back together within two weeks.
Queensland’s Child Safety Minister Desley Boyle has also indicated
that the baby currently in the care of the authorities there would be
returned to his mother as soon as possible.
“One inappropriate action by a parent does not mean that they will
permanently lose their child,” said Ms Boyle last weekend.
“There can always be unusual circumstances and people should not
jump to conclusions until the full assessment has been made.”
Amy left for Australia shortly after her 21st birthday celebrations almost
five months ago.
It’s believed that family members and her friends were completely
unaware that she was pregnant.
Since she revealed the situation Amy has received a medical check-up and
counselling.
She left her baby in a public area of the restroom of the Chevron Renaissance
Building in the Gold Coast resort of Surfers’ Paradise at 7.45am
on March 5.
The baby boy had been well cared for and was found to be in perfect health.
When police and the Department of Child Services in Queensland failed
to find her they released CCTV footage of a young woman leaving the building’s
car park about the time the baby was left there.
Investigating officers in Australia were then given a significant lead
when an unidentified caller to a local newspaper identified the Wexford
woman as the possible mother of the child. |
