News In : Manchester welcomes Taoiseach

MANCHESTER’S Irish community were out in strength when Taoiseach Bertie Ahern visited the bustling city prior to their upcoming St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

Mr Ahern thanked the many groups from the city’s vibrant Irish community who joined the hearty reception at the Irish World Heritage Centre for their hard work in putting together an exciting programme for the impending national day and the week of events that will surround it.

He also commended their devotion to the Irish World Heritage Centre and its bright future envisioned in their plans for a new centre including an Irish Diaspora museum.

Centre chairman Michael Forde said: “We are delighted to welcome the Taoiseach back to the centre and we really appreciate his ongoing support for the new development.”

Free theatre

THEATRE treats are in store this month as an Irish production company kicks-off its spring season across London.

Croft Productions brings the emotional tale The Little English Girl to the boards at the London Irish Centre in Camden on Monday, March 10, with a rehearsed reading of the Belfast-based story.

The free event will show off the critically-acclaimed talent of Belfast’s own Laurence McDonald who is a member of the centre’s Playwrights Group and brings highly-charged themes of family conflict and hidden resentment to the forefront in this piece.

The season continues with Tom O’Brien’s black comedy, Money From America, showing at the Broadway Studio Theatre in Catford from March 11-20.

Cheques banned

MARKS & SPENCER has become the latest retailer in Ireland to ban cheques — forcing customers to pay by cash or card instead.

M&S will not accept personal cheques at its 20 Irish stores from March 1 saying the handwritten payment orders represent fewer than 2 per cent of all transactions today.

Last year retail giants Argos, Penneys and Boots stopped accepting cheques in Ireland alongside many independent retailers.
