Sea eagles will be a welcome sight in Irish skies

A five-year breeding exp-eriment to re-introduce eagles in Ireland takes flight this week.

It will see 15 white-tailed sea eagle chicks, that have travelled first class from Norway to Kerry International Airport, released in Killarney National Park.

The white-tailed sea eagle was once common in Ireland but died out after being trapped and shot in the 19th and 20th centuries.

International researchers have identified Co. Kerry as the best place in Ireland to re-introduce the birds because of the unique rugged coastline habitat.

The birds will be reared with minimum human contact and monitored closely by a team of experts.

They can grow up to 100cm long and will eventually have a 250cm wing-span.

It is hoped that the five-year project will generate local tourism revenue.

In Scotland sea eagles attract thousands of visitors and are worth up to ?3million a year to the economy of Mull Island.
