Singular error

A letter in the Irish Times reads:

“Madam, am I alone in wondering what visiting Italians think of being offered ‘a panini’ in the singular? It is the equivalent of selling ‘a sandwiches’ in Italy.

Andy Devane, New Ross, Co. Wexford.”

Well Mr Devane, to answer your question yes, you probably are alone.

The rest of us have something called lives (which I believe is ‘vita’ in Italian — I don’t know the plural.)

But just to cheer you up, here’s a joke before you compose another letter.

A Roman centurion goes into a pub and says: “Barman! A martinus and lemonade if you please.”

“Surely you mean a martini?” says the barman.

“Look mate,” says the centurion, “when I want a double I’ll ask for it.”
