Taoiseach announces nominees for Seanad The Taoiseach
Bertie Ahern has named his 11 nominees for the Seanad.
As expected, four of the new seats have gone to the Green Party and the
Progressive Democrats (PDs).
Dan Boyle and Deirdre de Burca of the Green Party are both included after
failing to secure election to the Dáil, along with Fiona O’Malley
and Ciaran Cannon for the PDs.
Other nominees are Fianna Fáil members Martin Brady, Ivor Callely,
Maria Corrigan, John Ellis, Lisa McDonald and Brian Ó Domhnaill.
The first five mounted unsuccessful Dáil campaigns in May, while
Mr Ó Domhnaill failed to get elected to the Seanad on the industrial
and commercial panel.
The Taoiseach’s final nominee is Sunday Independent columnist and
part-time university lecturer Eoghan Harris.
Speaking on RTÉ Radio Mr Harris said that his strong intervention
backing the Taoiseach on The Late Late Show in the days before the General
Election may have been a factor in his appointment.
Last week Leitrim politician Paschal Mooney, who is well-known in Britain
for his work promoting and championing the welfare of Ireland’s
Diaspora, was among those who lost his Seanad seat. |
