Taoiseach to appear at Mahon Tribunal
Taoiseach
Bertie Ahern is expected to give evidence to Ireland’s planning
tribunal.
Mr Ahern is due to appear before the Mahon Tribunal for a possible two
days before its summer break.
The tribunal will also hear evidence from Tom Gilmartin the Sligo-born
developer has claimed Cork businessman Owen O’Callaghan made a payment
to Mr Ahern, an allegation denied by both men.
The tribunal is currently examining Mr Ahern’s personal finances
including a £30,000 payment made to him by Manchester-based businessman
Michael Wall.
Also under the spotlight are
a number of foreign exchange transactions made at the O’Connell
Street branch of AIB.
Several bank officials will give evidence along with the Taoiseach’s
former partner Celia Larkin.
The tribunal has already heard the testimony of a number of bank officials
including a foreign exchange expert and the deputy manager of the O’Connell
Street branch.
Among the key questions to be addressed over the coming days are the foreign
currency transactions including what the tribunal suggests might equate
to a lodgement of $45,000.
Mr Ahern has repeatedly denied he made any dollar transactions at the
bank.
He has also raised concerns there may be a smear campaign under way to
try to discredit him. |
