Vote to put Dublin on Monopoly board

By Elaine Sheridan

A new edition of the world’s most popular board game is to be introduced this year and we’re asking Irish Post readers to help ensure Ireland makes the final cut.

Monopoly players around the globe are currently voting for their favourite cities to feature on the first worldwide edition of the popular board game.

And the Irish are being asked to make sure that Dublin isn’t overlooked.

Online voting opened this week to choose the 22 greatest cities in the world to feature on the board.

The city that receives the most votes will be placed on the highest rent property, which is famously held on the Irish edition by Shrewsbury Road in Dublin and Mayfair in the British version.

Helen Martin from Monopoly makers Parker Brothers said: “Monopoly is the world’s most popular board game and it transcends cultural barriers.

“More than 750million people have played the game since it was first introduced nearly 75 years ago and its popularity shows no sign of slowing down.”

For more than seven decades the official Monopoly board has represented elite locations in individual cities.

But recently makers Parker Brothers have invited fans of the game to help update the board in their respective countries to reflect what the game board would look like if it were created today instead of in 1935.

The votes resulted in the Here And Now versions of the game in each country — with often surprising results.

In Britain, more votes were cast during the online vote than were cast in the local elections taking place at the same time.

Irish Monopoly players can go online at www.monopoly .com to cast their votes to help ensure that Dublin’s fair city features on the new worldwide edition.

Voters are allowed to cast their ballots for up to 10 cities each day of the vote, which will remain open until February 28.

The new version will be produced in toy company Hasbro’s plant in Waterford this autumn — where currently around 1.5million of the games are made each year and shipped around the world.

The cities voted onto the final game board will be announced in August.

Why Dublin should feature on Monopoly: A Dub’s eye point of view

It’s simple really. Dublin ticks all the boxes.

It’s a fabulous city renowned for its restaurants, theatres, hotels and pubs.

It’s young, trendy and chic and it’s a city on the move.

And where else can you find the smallest, highest and hippest pubs in Ireland?

As for Guinness — you’ll never taste better!

It’s a diverse city where you can get a box at the opera or just stroll along Temple Bar soaking up the atmosphere.

You can shop ’til you drop or drink ’til you’re drunk.

Its rich history spans over a thousand years with Viking remains and Georgian Squares at the turn of almost any corner.

Behan, Swift, Wilde and Joyce — just some of the names of literary choice.

It’s a sophisticated, romantic 21st-century fashion capital that lies picturesquely between the mountains and the sea.

You can dig into a bag of chips or dine out in Michelin-Star style.

The city is served by a good transport system including the DART and the more recent Luas tram link.

Dublin is not just a place, it’s a feeling, an energy, a spirit!

And, last but certainly not least, Dubliners are undoubtedly some of the most colourful characters you are ever likely to meet!
