Youngsters help Belfast celebrate

By Staff Reporter

It was hands across the water when young GAA players from the city of Birmingham crossed the Irish Sea to help mark the centenary of Belfast City Hall.

Two teams of youngsters from the Midlands were chosen by celebration organisers to join the festivities during a fun-packed weekend in the North of Ireland.

The Under-14 hurling and camogie teams from the Birmingham-based Erin Go Bragh GAA Club were the only under-age representatives from Britain chosen to take part in the event.

They were picked in recognition of the major work done by the club in promoting under-age GAA sports in Britain.

The teams took part in a series of challenge events which included basketball, camogie, cricket, girls hockey and hurling.

And the teams left a lasting memento of their trip when Kildare-born Erin Go Bragh club secretary Dennis Neenan handed over a plaque from the City of Birmingham to Belfast’s Deputy Lord Mayor Councillor Ruth Patterson during a special banquet at Belfast City Hall.

A proud Dennis said: “We were delighted to accept the invitation and also of the fact that Belfast City Council recognises the work we do in Birmingham.”

Erin go Bragh have a line-up of sporting fixtures over the weekend November 25-26 taking place at the club’s HQ in Holly Lane in the Erdington area of Birmingham.

The club will be playing host for the first time to under-age soccer and Gaelic teams from Edenderry in Co. Offaly.

The Offaly contingent are flying to Birmingham arriving on Friday November 24 and the following day the Edenderry U-11 and U-12 soccer teams will play their Erin go Bragh counterparts — the U-11 teams kicking off at 10.30am followed by the U-12s at noon.

On the Saturday afternoon the Offaly visitors will visit Aston Villa’s Villa Park football ground and also watch the main game of the day.

That evening there is a full line-up of entertainment at Holly Lane and on the Sunday morning at 11am the Offaly U-12 Gaelic team will play Erin go Bragh.
