Trendy Boogaloo bar hosts a night with Pete and Kate

BY Elaine Sheridan

TWO years ago The Irish Post branded the Irish-owned Boogaloo bar in Highgate the coolest in Britain.

And with news that one of the world’s most photographed models Kate Moss celebrated her 33rd birthday there last week it seems the watering hole still hasn’t lost that status.

Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty threw a surprise party for his glamorous girlfriend at the hip Boogaloo bar where the rest of the group came along with Kate’s best mate, actress and socialite Sadie Frost who was delighted to join in the celebrations.

Rumour has it that the finest Dom Perignon was flying around as Pete and his band played a show in Kate’s honour.

At midnight Pete serenaded his supermodel girlfriend from the stage and the whole crowd joined in.

Dublin band — uber-cool 747s — were also among those in attendance on the night.

Unfortunately Boogaloo regular Shane MacGowan was otherwise engaged and therefore missing from his perch at the bar.

Despite its unassuming façade the Archway Road boozer has built a reputation throughout London for it relaxed and laid-back style.

But according to the many punters who frequent the Highgate bar and the various artists who often request to play there, what sets it apart from any other in London is its jukebox.

It contains only classic tracks that are at least 10 years old and every month it features a different celebrity’s top-10 favourite hits.

It’s that unique selection of music that appeals to both musicians and punters alike.

Gerry O’Boyle and his business partner John Keane opened the pub back in 2003 and admit they haven't looked back since.

Sligo man Gerry said; “It’s become a music and entertainment industry hub hangout. It;s like the Groucho Club for the music industry.

“The club nights have been a huge success and it’s become a breeding ground for new bands from all over.

“There’s loads of new talent to look out for especially Little B who is set to play here. She’s definitely going to make it in the big time. Watch out for her.”

Other well-known faces to frequent the establishment since it opened include the Gallagher brothers Noel and Liam, singer/songwriter Damien Dempsey, Johnny Knoxville of Jackass fame and Razorlight frontman Johnny Borrell.

The friendly bar has catered for launches, parties, video and photo shoots for some of the trendiest media companies in Britain and Ireland and continues to become a magnet for the hip and stylish in North London.
